Opinion: Left-Wing Progressivism Has Turned My Town Into A Shell

Written By Shane Frampton, Posted on August 30, 2022

“Love Wins,” The rainbow letters say on the city hall of Mt. Pearl, Newfoundland, where it also flies the Pride Progress Flag and the Ukrainian flag. To be short, this sickens me. Activism does not have a place in our local institutions, the civil service, healthcare, or schooling. It should not be allowed, it cripples the effectiveness and moral character of anything it touches.

Meanwhile, there is a labor strike in the city, and roads and walking paths have been in a state of disrepair for over 3 years now. Either half-heartedly blocked off [and ignored by the public who walk the paths anyways] or slowly done half-assed roads. Things that take the mainland a couple of days are dragged out for months. All the big public revenue-making events for the city have been shut down all summer.

The workers in local public-sector unions want more money, but don’t want to work for it, but are able to pressure and bully their way into getting it anyway. Greed is bankrupting all of Newfoundland, not just Mount Pearl.

Only a week ago, not 2 doors up the street in the wee hours of the morning a small group of young men were trying to break and enter into homes or their parked cars. These are all family homes with very young children or seniors living out their golden years in close proximity to their grandchildren. How do I know this happened? The video was shared on FaceBook, a video recorded via a front door camera the family had the good forethought of installing.

I could say, with 20/20 hindsight that I saw the signs half a decade ago, every time it would get cloudy, foggy, or rainy the rats would come up from the sewer systems and hide in our backyards. This is a superb city by the way, not a rural town.

On Wednesday, August 24, a 51-year-old lady stabbed a police officer in Atlantic Place, a major commercial and office complex that also houses the provincial courts on the higher levels, located in Mount Pearl’s sister city and Newfoundland’s capital St. John’s. People are stealing heavy equipment and ATMs, random fires break out and take out buildings, and gang signs pop up on the newest of public works right down to the most mundane, benches. Not just a single tag now mind you but dozens all over. Even a summer ago a community found itself being firebombed, multiple times!

The only thing I can say is that my country, Newfoundland, has lost its spirit. It has had its well poisoned by corrupt, incompetent leaders on every level, and left-wing progressive idealism. It could be said calling these people leaders in any sense is repellent to the actual meaning of the word. These people are looters.

Our government will put up empty slogans like “LOVE WINS,” they will fly activist flags, and they will do all the performative virtue signaling there can be done. They will not however act virtuously, it is all a sham. They will stay in their ivory towers, sequestered away from any critics protected by thugs with guns. Our government is disconnected from reality, as all activist movements are.

Their version of social justice utopia will be found no matter how the rest of us suffer and die along the way.

Such a shame. I often wonder how these "leaders" get elected. I would hope the majority would argue they are failing at their jobs and would face a negative vote next time around. Thing is, that’s happening at all levels of government and all across Canada. It’s difficult to understand.

The problem is that we, municipal, provincial and federal, are being run by the Extreme Left. The Media is owned and run by the Extreme Left, and they hire Reporters from the Extreme Left. And those Reporters wouldn’t know Investigative Reporting if it bit them you know where. They just report what the powers that be, tell them to report, and don’t say anything against our so called leaders in our so called governments. The pendulum that swung way to far to the Left, and hopefully soon, the swing back will start. Let’s just hope it settles somewhere to the right of middle, where people want to work, do an honest days work for an honest days pay, etc. Too many people looking for handouts. Time to cut off the gravy train to ALL those feeding at the trough, and make them work for a living. Glad I’m closer to the end than the beginning. The Extreme Left Liberals have royally screwed up this city, province and country.

AMEN TO THAT. ACTIVISM IN OUR INSTITUTIONS IS AN OUTRIGHT DISGRACE A DEMORALIZATION & SUBVERSION OF EVERY PUBLIC OFFICE ACROSS THE COUNTRY. IF YOU WANT TO PROMOTE SOMETHING LET IT BE ONLY THE CANADIAN CONSTITUTION, CHARTER of RIGHTS & FREEDOMS & BILL of RIGHTS, THAT PROTECTS INDIVIDUAL "EQUAL RIGHTS" NOT "SPECIAL RIGHTS" PANDERING TO SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS FOISTING THEM INTO THE FACE OF & DISCRIMINATING AGAINST CANADIANS WHO DO NOT AGREE WITH THEM FOR CONSCIENCE or RELIGIOUS BELIEFS & THEREBY TRAMPLING THE RIGHTS OF OTHERS & MAKING CANADIAN TAX PAYERS FOOT THE BILL TO BOOT. TAX PAYERS RIGHTLY EXPECT YOU TO JUST DO YOUR JOB PERIOD.

Very similar to our tiny town on the north end of Vancouver island BC,, drug overdoses, many small business’s closed, compleatly unaffordable housing, no doctors, the wonderful spirit of the community feels gutted. I wish I had answers to this, sadly it seems the government is complicit on ALL levels.
