China’s Communist Government Cancels Its Infamous Zero-COVID Policy

The Chinese Communist Party government in China has just announced it is reversing its authoritarian Zero-COVID policy. 

Zero-COVID was the public policy that caused millions of Chinese citizens to get welded into their homes, locked inside stores to “quarantine” or put into camps whenever any COVID infection was detected in a mainland Chinese city. 

Now the vast majority of testing and quarantine requirements have been wiped out. Chinese state-media is reporting this policy change as the Zero-COVID policy being “relaxed” but it is clear the government is in full retreat on the COVID issue.

This scientifically illiterate policy, championed by President Xi Jinping, was seemingly designed to show the strength of China’s Communist system, demonstrating that the collectivized police state could successfully eliminate COVID. Obviously, COVID was too infectious and spread extremely easily so President Xi really just subjected his own people to economic devastation, severe depression, and even starvation and immolation inside apartment buildings welded shut. 

And to be clear, it was not the Chinese government that finally repealed the Zero-COVID policy due to it not working; the government would have kept it in place forever if they could. It was the Chinese people who forced the government to drop it by protesting, and rioting, in a country where opposition to the government is severely punished. 

Interestingly enough, Western media which supported lockdowns at home only seemed to clue into how authoritarian it is to lock people in their homes and arrest them if they try to gather with others when China continued to do it into 2022, several months after most other countries dropped their restrictions.

It just goes to show anything is permissible while it’s fashionable, and quickly falls out of favour when the cultural establishment moves on to new trends.

At least it is good to see the Chinese people demonstrating that no matter how draconian their government becomes, they still have the power to stand up against it, but hopefully, people in the West will learn from what happened in China just how bad things can get when the government is granted unlimited power.
