Alberta NDP States Its Goal Is To “Establish And Maintain A Democratic Socialism Government In Alberta”

One public, yet slightly buried under the surface aspect of the Alberta NDP is that despite trying to market itself as a unifying centrist political party it is still openly a “democratic socialist” party, according to its own party constitution.

Right at the top of the Alberta NDP’s party constitution (linked on the Alberta NDP’s website), Section 1.03 the party declares that:

1.03 The purpose of the Party is to promote the principles of democratic socialism in Alberta and to establish and maintain a democratic socialist government in Alberta through the electoral process.

How is this centrist or moderate?

And the Alberta NDP cannot claim the section of their constitution referring to themselves as “socialists” no longer represents them as the NDP has yearly annual general meetings and party delegates could propose deleting/editing that section. It’s literally at the top of the constitution, nobody could have missed it.

Radicalism

Let’s be very clear, despite the Alberta NDP and its leader Rachel Notley, with the help of the legacy media, trying to act like the NDP is a centrist political party, you do not have to look very hard to find openly anti-capitalist, socially far-left, and anti-oil and gas NDP MLA candidates. 

Political radicals, which include (but are definitely not limited to):

Radicals like Calgary-East NDP candidate Roseman Valencia who thinks Alberta is a “racist society” while he himself looks up to and associates with anti-semites and communists, pushed an anti-police conspiracy theory and supports illegal anti-pipeline protests.

Radicals like NDP Edmonton-Highlands-Norwood MLA Janis Irwin, who supported the defund the police movement, calls parents “hateful” for opposing drag shows for children (she also promotes youth drag shows herself), and frequently antagonizes people from Christian and Catholic religious backgrounds. 

Radicals like Calgary-Elbow NDP candidate Samir Kayande who wrote about Alberta’s oil and gas industry in a 2021CBC opinion column that “Hydrocarbon must go away. There’s no alternative. It’s too polluting. And the longer we wait, the worse the reckoning. It’s only a matter of time.”

Radicals like Calgary-Currie NDP candidate Janet Eremenko, who despite effectively never having a real job in her life has tried to advise the Alberta government on how to “fight poverty” which her main contribution to seems to be complaining about rich people, like a true socialist. Eremenko also is skeptical that law enforcement can reduce crime while saying Alberta’s criminal justice system needs to deal with “systemic racism”. 

And just a reminder that the radicalism is not isolated to just individuals within the NDP. The entire NDP caucus voted for an “Anti-Racism” bill that would mandate the collection of “race based data” on public employees with the implication of starting to hire public employees based on their race, which itself is an overtly racist practice. 

The idea that the NDP is right in the centre of political ideologies is ridiculous. Like the NDP says themselves they are a democratic socialist party whose goal is to “establish and maintain a democratic socialist government in Alberta”.
