Alphonso Boyle Davies, currently playing for Bayern Munich FC, has been named rookie of the year for the German Bundesliga Football League, 2019 – 20.

This past season Davies was able to step up to the plate, as many successive injuries began straining the club, forcing Bayern to reshuffle several positions, putting Davies into the left fullback position where he was well more than a placeholder.

Davies turned heads this season as he set a speed record during the final match of the Bundesliga season, which was a hair raising 1 – 0 win for Bayern over SV Werder Bremen, claiming the 8th straight championship win for the club.

At only 19 years of age, Davies’ will be one to watch as he’s proven himself a powerhouse of an athlete, having already distinguished himself playing for Team Canada since 2017, at which time he was the youngest player to join a men’s national team for Canada. Then too, Davies did more than hold his own on the international stage, as he scored 2 goals in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Davies’ success can’t be taken for granted, as he comes from extremely humble/harsh beginnings.

Although he of Liberian background, Davies was actually born in a refugee camp in Ghana as his family was forced to flee Liberia due to the violence there at that time. Davies and his family immigrated to Canada when he was 5, settling in Edmonton Alberta. Davies gained full Canadian citizenship in 2017.
