Right after 9/11, analysts and political pundits took to the stage – there were books and articles written with a view about how to defeat the enemy militarily. But very few pinpointed the underlying cause that this is a war against an ideology – that this is not a war of weapons but a war of ideas. Muslim reformers had predicted what would happen if the ideology goes unchecked. There is an entire generation of young people – the millennials who have no idea of the history of Islamism which existed before 9/11.
I read about the cancellation of Canada Day and it saddens me. Ask any immigrant and they will tell you how much Canada means to them. Pitched as a country that time and again has been polled as one of the best countries to live in, we should not shut down the celebration of its inception. To me there is no other country in the world that celebrates differences the way Canada does.
The point being is that most mainstream coverage of the incidents as one-sided with Israel getting the raw end of the deal and with little or no context. The news stories portray a victimized Muslim/Palestinian community during the last important days of Ramadan (the holiest month of the Islamic calendar) being attacked indiscriminately by ‘wicked’ Israelis. As a result, all over the Muslim world, Muslims are in a hysterical frenzy posting on media, social media, writing, and exposing the ‘evil’.
At that time, I laughed it off as ‘cancel culture’ was not yet a mania. Since then, ‘cancel culture’ has seriously taken off and has become part of the framework in the West. If you don’t agree with the ‘official narrative’ and opinions – you get cancelled. It’s as simple as that.
Mr. Trudeau admits that there are not many cases coming from the Caribbean or Mexico but even one is too many. I’m amazed to hear that one holiday is one too many but the fact that our seniors are falling like dominos due to negligence and incompetence since the first wave seems to have little or no effect on the Federal or Provincial leadership.
Because she was an activist, unfortunately, the community wants to distance itself except the people who are passionate about human rights and other Baloch activists. Mainstream media also avoids such issues.
