Canada is technically in a “fifth wave” of COVID-19 due to the rise cases of the omicron variant, and both elected officials and legacy media organizations all around the country are attempting to portray a spike in cases as a major threat to public health.
The issue is that although it is true that there is a large wave of cases, per capita the harm being inflicted on the Canadian population is incredibly mild. Omicron’s symptoms tend to be similar to a mild cold, and a large portion of people who get it don’t even realize they have it until they are tested for it.
Canada is not just experiencing another major spike in cases, it is the largest spike by far, yet when you look at the deaths there is no evidence cases of omicron pose a significant danger to the vast majority of people.
The death rate is in fact at one of its lowest rates since March of 2020, and despite this, the media is making it seem like Canada is still in a public health crisis. Every death is a tragedy but when recently there are only 17 deaths per day in a country over over 38 million no restrictions or mandates are justified, let alone constitutional.
Politicians are also adding gasoline to the media’s fire, by pretending that the cases are putting Canadians at risk and that more draconian restirctions are needed to save us from a public health disaster.
Albertans need access to proper COVID-19 testing.
This is the ONLY way to get a true sense of the size of the fifth wave. so we can then take steps to stop the spread and get through to the other side.

With no plan for a safe return to school, Doug Ford has once again put the health of our students & education workers, and livelihoods of parents at risk. He's had months to create smaller class sizes, a testing program, and improve ventilation. #onpolihttps://t.co/wAW0MNVdtj

It is as if every opposition political party knows their entire election strategy revolves around pretending they could have eliminated COVID if they were in power and passing the even more authoritarian measures despite the current premiers’ own restrictions having completely failed while violating Canadians’ constitutional rights.
Arguable now that a seemingly exponential rise in cases of COVID-19 goes along with a flatlining rate of deaths Canada is already at the end of the pandemic.
It would be great to recognize that COVID is no longer a substantial threat to Canadians, but the cultural and political elite seem invested in turning the pandemic into a ‘casedemic’. No matter how low the per-case death rate falls the fact that high case rates are being reported means they will constantly fearmonger about hospitals potentially being overwhelmed or pretend that every death could have been realistically prevented.
The good thing is it seems like most Canadians are growing tired of the fearmongering and want to focus on real issues like the inflation crisis and curbing out-of-control government spending.
