MP for Hastings – Addington and Lennox, and Conservative Party leadership candidate Derek Sloan said in a webinar discussing religious liberty that he would designate the Egyptian and international Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization.
The attendee of the webinar asked whether or not Sloan would crack down on extremist organizations like the Muslim Brotherhood, who have been talked about increasingly as the Conservative leadership election has progressed.
Sloan said regarding the Muslim Brotherhood that he opposed the group, labeling them as an extremist faction of Islam, condemning their tactic of political entryism, and their well-known reputation for political violence as well as funding of terrorism overseas.
The Muslim Brotherhood may not be directly involved with as many violent attacks as other terrorist organizations, but they have been bankrolling and assisting terrorist organizations all over the world in the same may as the Islamic Republic of Iran does.
For context on who the Muslim Brotherhood are, although an unknown organization to most Canadians, overseas they are very well known for their radical hardline Islamic rhetoric and extremely violent governments their proponents operate.
The short lived Muslim Brotherhood government in Egypt (2012-2013) headed by president Mohammad Morsi is one example that gives a good glimpse into the practices of the Brotherhood when unrestrained.
Morsi is the type of man who referred to Israeli citizens as “killers and vampires,” and while president essentially pushed Coptic Orthodox Christians out of public life by throwing over many of the government’s responsibilities to the Copts as citizens onto their churches instead.
Morsi had also made his edicts as president exempt from legal review, people were allowed to be detained without judicial review for 30 days, and pro-Brotherhood gangs were allowed to brutalize Christians and burn down churches.
Morsi’s enforcement and enabling of extremist and violent interpretations of Sunni Islam lead to him being deposed in 2013, not much longer than only a year in power, with Egyptians favouring a military dictatorship under Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi over the Muslim Brotherhood.
In the United States the Holy Land Foundation (HLF) was set up under the supposed mission to provide humanitarian programs to Arabs in the Palestinian controlled areas of Israel. Later in 2009 it was discovered that HLF was merely a Muslim Brotherhood front group that had funnelled $12.4 million to help finance Hamas terrorist activities against Israel.
Hamas itself is a military wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, having described itself as the Palestinian chapter of the Muslim Brotherhood. Hamas had been designated as a terrorist organization in Canada since 2002, and by the United Kingdom in 2001.
In 2015, then UK Prime Minister David Cameron released a statement in regards to a review of the Muslim Brotherhood where he said, “The main findings of the review support the conclusion that membership of, association with, or influence by the Muslim Brotherhood should be considered as a possible indicator of extremism.”
In response to the review of the Muslim Brotherhood the UK government began denying Brotherhood members visas who have made “extremist comments” and place more stringent oversight of Muslim Brotherhood charities to ensure funds are used for a “lawful charitable purpose.”
Clearly the UK’s government developed a keen distrust for the Muslim Brotherhood in the aftermath of the review of their activities.
Even today there are multiple large Muslim Brotherhood front groups that operate in the Canada. Four organizations were identified as Muslim Brotherhood front groups in Senate testimony, those being the Muslim Association of Canada, Islamic Relief Canada, National Council of Canadian Muslims, and the International Relief Fund for the Afflicted and Needy.
Many are ignorant of the harmful ideology of many Muslim Brotherhood supporters as they are unlikely to admit to their associations and toxic beliefs in public, or at least not in English.
There is no question whether or not the Muslim Brotherhood is a major player in the issue of terrorism around the world, and the inability for politicians to call out their extremist ideology and practices have only embolden their various branches.
Derek Sloan by taking on the Muslim Brotherhood will be the first politician in Canada to call out the little known group for their covert pushing of radical ideologies and quiet funding of terrorist activities overseas.
