The Establishment Defends Amira Elghawaby While Others Are Cancelled For Nothing

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is currently in a political bind for appointing Canada’s first federal “anti-Islamaphobia inclusion advisor”, Amira Elghawaby, who seems to have a problem with other Canadians. The problem has nothing to do with alleged bigotry being directed at her as the Liberal, NDP, and media are claiming; it’s divisive rhetoric coming from her being directed at other Canadians. ‘

A particularly empty-headed op-ed from the Toronto Star, written by Andrew Phillps, was headlined with the statement, “Uproar over Amira Elghawaby appointment proof of need for someone like her in the job,” which tries to sidestep all of the issues Elghawaby has brought onto herself and tries to imply Canada is just full of bigots. 

Although the media and federal leftists are focusing their fire on the Quebec provincial government for demanding Elghawaby resign or be fired, they still have yet to explain why a woman with her view should be accepted. Is the Quebec government great on the issue of discrimination? No, but two wrongs don’t make a ‘who cares,’ especially when the media and political establishment have run down individuals for completely fictitious bigotry in the past. 

Elghawaby can be correct that Quebec’s Bill 21, banning the wearing of religious symbols in public service jobs, is bigoted, but at the same time, she can also be a problematic person for saying former Prime Minister Stephen Harper was “worse than 9-11” and attacking the Canadian police as racist, criticizing Queen Elizabeth II after she died, and hanging out with anti-semites. 

In contrast, we should look at a public employee who was attacked by the political and media establishments in spite of literally doing nothing wrong when viewed with a rational eye.

Alberta’s former Human Rights Commissioner, Colin May, was subjected to a political struggle session by both the UCP and NDP for writing a book review back in 2009 (it wasn’t even available online) about the book Islamic Imperials: A History, written by history professor Efraim Karsh, where May merely gave an overview of what Karsh’s point was about historical Islamic conquest and commented on the quality of the writing and research.

For daring to review a book about Islam, May, an openly gay man, was pressured by Justice Minister Tyler Shandro to apologize to Mustafa Farooq from the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM). May obviously took issue with this demand and refused to do it because he hadn’t done anything wrong and the NCCM requiring him to apologize could be seen as quite hypocritical.

May is currently in the process of suing him for being wrongfully removed from his position.

It seems that Elghawaby is being so closely defended by Justin Trudeau and NDP leader Jagmeet Singh despite a clear record of divisive statements purely for identity reasons. Colin May is a white man so he can be thrown under the bus for nothing, but Elghawaby being a Muslim woman causes her statements to be graded on a curve by members of the political left.

Someone may point out that former “anti-hate” consultant Laith Marouf was fired by the Liberal government for making anti-semitic posts, but doing the right thing in one instance where the bigotry of the person’s posts was extreme doesn’t let the Liberals ignore a second instance of divisiveness. On top of that, Marouf being a man makes him a far easier to expend public servant than Elghawaby who the political and media establishment can more easily recast as the victim of her critics.

Again it should be noted that barely anyone defended Colin May at the time Minister Shandro removed him as the human rights commissioner, all the while nobody could actually explain how May reviewing a book was “Islamaphobic.”

We cannot have functional political discourse when there are no standards for what is right and wrong. Right now all we have is arbitrary social standards based on who people are and not what they do. 

The federal Conservatives and Quebec provincial government should not let up on demanding Elghawaby or be suspended and made to apologize. Liberals associates cannot be allowed to get away with real divisive rhetoric while people like Colin May are destroyed based on mere insinuations and innuendo.
