At the start of the year when the first vaccines started to hit the market, the Conservatives made the claim that “Canada was last in line for vaccines”. This was met with a chorus of ridicule for the Liberals and the media when Canada was the third country to put a needle in someone’s arm. The claim at the time was that Canada had the largest vaccine portfolio in the world.
The Liberals and their allies remained smug as the story came out that Canada had refused to purchase 16 million Moderna vaccines because the Liberals were certain that the country would be fully inoculated before they arrived. There was even talk at the beginning about how Canada would have so many that we would even be able to send our excess to developing nations because we were going to have so many and Justin Trudeau is just that magnanimous of a leader. Oh how the mighty have fallen.
Now, because of Trudeau’s immense hubris and failure, Canada has started taking vaccines that were meant for those very same developing nations.
To the credit of all of the mainstream outlets in the country, they did cover this story. However, where are the histrionic op-eds from the “race and gender” columnists accusing Trudeau of racism and colonial attitudes feeling like he can take from the supply of developing nations?
The thing that drives half the country crazy here is that we all know what would have happened if Stephen Harper had been in charge during this debacle. The Toronto Star would have burned down due to the collective rage and furious typing of their editorial staff as this would have been definitive proof of the failure of all Conservative economic and social polices and a stunning inditement of Harper’s “white supremacist” views. But no such outrage can be seen.
In a time of heightened political polarization, with a government that wants to curb the Far-Right so badly that they baselessly declared the Proud Boys a terrorist organization, while ignoring their commitment to declare the IRGC one, they are failing to do the one thing that will curb the rise of the Far-Right the most. End the gaslighting.
It is this brand of rank hypocrisy coming from Trudeau’s “trusted sources” that is driving people to new alternative sources. Some of them are very high quality, and some are pure conspiratorial nonsense from random social media accounts. However, at this point what is the difference from getting your news purely from mainstream sources and Qanon? Both have clear political bias, and both have been proven to be unreliable.
There have been countless examples of Trudeau’s gaslighting and hypocrisy, my favourite being when he claimed after the report of missing and murdered indigenous women that Canada had an ongoing genocide. That’s right Trudeau admitted in public that he was currently committing crimes against humanity, in fact he shouted it to the world, and because everyone really knew that it wasn’t true there was no international tribunal he was dragged to. Yet at the same time we all had to pretend what he was true to avoid the social justice mob.
If Trudeau and his allies really cared about uniting people all that we really want he is for him to take some responsibility, admit that he isn’t perfect and vow to do better. Instead we are met with snobbery, isolation camps and promises to crack down on any dissenting media. What a horrifying joke.
