After intense backlash over the Peel Region distributing posters that recommended that parents keep their children mainly confined to their rooms after potential exposer to COVID-19 has caused some intense backpedaling efforts from the government.

The Peel Region’s Twitter account started off a retraction of their child isolation poster by saying “We made a mistake,” as if the public is supposed to believe the entire poster that likely goes through planning, editing, and approval processes somehow lacked “important details.”

It’s all too hard to believe based on the recommendations put forward in the poster that mirrored much of the over-the-top measures governments around Canada are putting in place was not what the Peel Region government meant to put out.
For context, this poster was instructing parents on what to do if their child is dismissed from school if they are exposed to COVID-19 in their classroom and must be isolated for 14 days before coming back to school.
The poster was literally recommending that over that 14 day period children should be mainly kept in their room and use a different bathroom from the rest of the family and socially distance by meters from the rest of their family at all times.
There is little wonder why this poster outraged parents. Not only is it incredibly draconian to isolate your own child that is showing no signs of having COVID-19, but likely isn’t great for their mental health, especially if they are elementary school age.
Despite the Peel Region government, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown, and Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie all saying that the poster was a “mistake” the actual clarifications made seemed to soften the message very little.
Anyone exposed to COVID-19 is directed to self-isolate at home away from others in the home as much as possible. That includes children.

The specific details about the caregiver isolating with the child were on our web site but not on the flyer. No surprise that it would upset and confuse people. We’re fixing it right now.

Other than clarifying that caretakers that the children need can interact with can, the Peel Region’s instructions still advocate for as much self-isolating as possible, not acknowledging what concerned most parents who were disgusted by the notion their kids who had no signs of having COVID-19 had to heavily self-isolate for 14 days in the first place.
You brain trusts really haven’t thought this through ….! A single parent raising multiple children can not self isolate with one child at the expense of the others.

On top of the fact the Peel Region government’s clarification was more of an obfuscation of the real issue, the poster seems inline with many of the overbearing restrictions put in place by other governments.
The federal government is currently running quarantine hotels for people returning home from air travel, and Quebec had been running a COVID-19 curfew in the not too distant past. Nobody would put it past Peel to instruct that child who theoretically could have COVID isolate in their rooms for 14 days.

In March back in 2020 the Canadian government had already been recommending isolating from people in your home so the notion of a more regional government promoting the same practice, especially in Toronto’s metro area, is not unlikely.
At this point, it would be downright foolish to assume the government pushing crazy lockdown measures and recommendations was a mistake, the track record of them doing so is too long to ignore.
The “new normal” in our society seems to be a government that doesn’t understand the public wants to figure out how to live with COVID-19 not just hide from it. At the very least the general public finally seems to be getting fed up with the government’s COVID-19 rhetoric and wants officials to be more realistic when it comes to their approach to public health.
