Liberal Member of Parliament from Mount Royal, Quebec, Anthony Housefather on June 25, in the aftermath of the United States Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, tweeted out an attack against one of the Justices on the Supreme Court.
Housefather went after Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, a black conservative member of the court, for having mentioned other cases in his own concurrence to the decision written by Samuel Alito, regarding same-sex marriage and a right to contraceptives.
Although those topics are controversial, Justice Thomas argues that in the same way Roe v. Wade was poorly decided, cases like Obergefell v. Hodges (same-sex marriage case) relied on trying to read ‘rights’ into the US constitution that did not exist within it.
Thomas takes no personal position on those issues but is of the legal opinion that legislation on those issues should be decided by individual states and that the Supreme Court should stick to upholding the original meaning of the constitution and its amendments.
MP Housefather ignores Justice Thomas’ legal philosophy and published a confusing tweet trying to smear him as a racist bigot.
The tweet read:
The only bright side of the majority decision overruling Roe is that they seem to only want to bring the country back 50 years. Justice Thomas’s concurring opinion seems to want to bring the US back to pre Civil War times.

Is Housefather really such a radical progressive that he thinks it is fair game to accuse a black judge of being in favour of slavery?
Maybe this should not be too much of a shock seeing as Housefather comes from the party where not one current MP could condemn Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s use of blackface.
The fact that Housefather’s tweet went unnoticed by the Canadian media for two days goes to show the double standard when it comes to the way Conservatives and Liberals are treated.
Conservative MPs like Arnold Viersen had the media’s spotlight put on them for celebrating the overturning of Roe, while Housefather gets away with speculating if Justice Thomas wants to see other black people forced back into chattel slavery.
No doubt if a Conservative made a comment as disgusting and racist as Anthony Housefather the media would already be speculating if they will be voted out of caucus, but Housefather can go around basically calling black people ‘Uncle Toms’ and he is likely to remain a well respected progressive by the standards of our liberal legacy media.
What a strange world we live in.
