Richard Décarie has endorsed social conservative candidate Derek Sloan. In an email sent to supporters this morning, the Décarie campaign declared his support to Sloan, who he describes as capable of carrying the “true blue conservative” standard.

Below is a transcript of the email.

The news comes days after Richard Décarie, a conservative with traditionalist leanings, was barred from the leadership race by the Conservative Party’s unelected LEOC. A committee tasked with overseeing the leadership campaign. The party’s spokesman Cory Hann says he can’t specify why Décarie wasn’t allowed to run and ex-MP Brad Trost, who was aiding Décarie’s campaign, says, the news blindsided the campaign.

Sloan

Derek Sloan is a rookie Member of Parliament for the Hastings-Lennox and Addington constituency near Toronto. He identifies as a social conservative and has spoken against Bill C-16, Justin Trudeau’s anti-speech legislation.

Sloan is objectively the most conservative candidate in the leadership race and has recently been taking issue with other candidates trying to portray themselves as highly principal. Sloan’s high standards for what he will and will not support is likely what attracted Décarie’s support.

Based on who Décarie is Sloan will not have a lot of room to waver on his views, if he does, or he will likely get Décarie’s endorsement taken away from him.
