Liberals To Censor The Internet To Fight Russia

It seems like there is a reflexive policy response from the Liberal Party that answers all of Canada’s problems: When in doubt, censor the internet. In this case, Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly has proposed this as a means of solving Ukraine’s problems as well.

Trudeau’s Foreign Affairs Minister believes that it is within her mandate to censor what she deems as Russian disinformation as a wartime measure, stating “My mandate as foreign minister is really to counter propaganda online.” First of all, that is not within her mandate, the Foreign Affairs department is supposed to promote Canada’s interests on the international scale. Secondly, this is ridiculous since we have not declared war on Russia, yet it looks like we will pretend we did to curb free speech domestically.

This continues the line of Trudeau Ministers who say it is their job to promote internet censorship, Steven Guilbeault thought that this was his main objective when he was Minister of Heritage. Yes, Canada is a country where our heritage department is focused on erasing parts of our history it deems offensive.

Ultimately this is just another excuse for the Liberals to try and monopolize the flow of information. This has been a major priority of the Trudeau government since its initial reelection in 2019.  They have subsidized the mainstream media outlets with hundreds of millions of dollars to make them reliant on the Liberal party, conducted lawfare against alternative media outlets, and have tried to find any reason they can to legislate dissidents off of social media with bills like C-10, C-11, and C-36.

In reality, all serious people know that even if every pro-Putin tweet is removed from the internet, it will make no difference to the war in Ukraine. What Cathy in Thunder Bay thinks about Russia is inconsequential, this is all a smokescreen to distract from the fact that the Trudeau government has so handicapped our military that we are not in a position to support our allies. If anything this will only turn more people towards Putin and Russia out of spite or reflexive obstinacy.

While Putin is a dictator who invaded a sovereign nation, the answer to countering him is not to make Canada more authoritarian. Vladimir Putin is a man who will murder any journalist who disagrees with him in order to control the flow of information to the Russian people. Justin Trudeau is a man who will freeze the bank accounts of journalists who disagree with him to control the flow of information to the Canadian people.
