Liberal MP, Marwan Tabbara, faced with several charges, including criminal harassment, break and entering, and assault

Guelph Police have confirmed that the Liberal Member of Parliament for Kitchener South-Hespeler, Marwan Tabbara, faces several charges following an arrest made in Guelph, on April 10th. 

Tabbara, 35, is charged with one count of criminal harassment, one count of break and enter and commit an indictable offence, and two counts of assault, which the police state was “a matter of public record.”

Guelph Police Constable Brian Murphy confirmed Tabbara’s arrest and the charges faced but remained mum on further details as little information could be released at this time.

His next court appearance is scheduled for June 19th, 2020.

A PMO spokesperson said they were investigating the matter, but could not comment on the matter at this time.

The executive assistant to Tabbara’s parliamentary office in Ottawa stated, “I’m afraid we don’t have any comment.”

First elected in 2015, Tabbara was re-elected in 2019, and chairs Parliament’s subcommittee on International Human Rights.

Tabbara took to Facebook earlier this week, speaking to the mass anti-racism protests in Canada and the U.S.

He writes, “Throughout our history, many great advocates have fought long and hard for justice, equality and opportunity for all. We owe it to them, to ourselves and to the next generation to root out racism and discrimination. We must strive for true equality for every individual regardless of skin colour, race, religion and sexual orientation.”

“I too stand in solidarity with those striving for justice and equality,” he said. “It’s up to all of us to do our part in striving for change and achieve equality for everyone.”

Tabbara hasn’t appeared at Parliament since March 9th, before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
