Team Canada strikes gold at World Juniors 2020

Canada emerged victorious against their Russian rivals in the 2020 IIHF World Junior Hockey Tournament final on Sunday afternoon, winning the gold medal after a 4-3 thriller. 

After a lacklustre start to the game, momentum picked up for both teams, and there were plenty of nail-biting moments as both sides proved lethal on the attack. 

Russia opened the scoring in the second period, and although Canada levelled on a power play, their opponents scored two unanswered goals. 

The Russian lead lasted until team Canada captain, Barrett Hayton, brought us back into the game with two brilliant goals.

Another gold for Team Canada

Despite having a somewhat troubling tournament plagued with injuries, a player suspension, and a rather inexperienced group of players, Canada ultimately prevailed.

With the competition stiffer over the last decade, than in years past, Team Canada has had its fair share of disappointing finishes. Nevertheless, their showing this time around proved why they remain a bastion of hockey talent.

Per TSN, this result marks the 5th time Canada has beaten Russia in tournament history, and the 18th time the team won gold. It also marks their third gold medal in six years.

The IIHF World Juniors provides an excellent opportunity for hockey fans to unite, and watch future stars in action. Many of which are NHL-bound.

Team Canada captain, Barrett Hayton, are amongst those ready to carve out a career in the big leagues. He already has 4 points in 14 games with the Arizona Coyotes.

Akil Thomas, who scored the golden goal, is a top prospect for the Los Angeles Kings, who are expected to contend for a lottery pick in the upcoming NHL Draft.
