On April 4th 2023, the Ontario NDP assembled a very diverse array of characters to propose a bill that would protect “2SLGBTQI+” communities. Leading the charge was Kristyn Wong-Tam, an MPP from the opposition NDP. Wong-Tam had a history of being the most hyper woke person on Toronto’s city council, and recently graduated to the position in provincial politics. She uses they/them pronouns in her twitter bio and markets herself as a champion of 2SLGBTQI+ issues.
Her newest proposal has gone viral online since it would effectively ban anyone from protesting drag queen events for children.

The proposal would temporarily turn any business hosting a drag show into a “2SLGBTQI+ community safety zone” which would prohibit anyone from engaging in hate speech within a 100 meter radius. The bill would follow what is acceptable within the current criminal code, which sounds reasonable, but Ontario law is not very libertarian on the issue.
The Ontario Human Rights code is very clear that misgendering is criminal discrimination that violates people’s rights to gender expression. Discrimination is defined as “happens when a person experiences negative treatment or impact, intentional or not, because of their gender identity or gender expression. It can be direct and obvious or subtle and hidden, but harmful just the same. It can also happen on a bigger systemic level such as organizational rules or policies that look neutral but end up excluding trans people. Friends, family or others who face discrimination because of their association with a trans person are also protected.”
So subtle unintended negative impact constitutes the same harm as intentionally malicious action. This is why people are fearful that laws like this will be used to crush freedom of speech in Canada.
The other thing to note is that this bill is clearly intended to enable drag performances for kids and that these drag shows are a method to indoctrinate children into gender theory. Kristyn Wong Tam’s own tweets make that very case.
"Drag Shows make a difference. They show that joyful life is possible for trans people. They give parents an opening to talk to their kids about gender. We need to protect these shows so it’s safe for kids to attend."

It should be noted that the NDP are the opposition party so it is not likely that this bill will get passed as is. However, many similar laws like this are popping up all over the country and Doug Ford PC party has been shown to be utter cowards without principle who tend to go whichever way the money blows.
In all probability we have not heard the last of this debate.
